HIAOOS joins Norsk Polarinstitutt at Arctic Frontiers 2023
HIAOOS was delighted to be part of the Arctic Frontiers special event hosted by Norsk Polarinstitutt, “Needs for international collaboration in the Arctic Ocean: Observations + science for societal needs.”
Observational campaigns in the interior Arctic Ocean are logistically and operationally challenging and costly. There are thus many good reasons for deep international and inter-disciplinary collaboration ranging from planning, through execution and analysis of data from observational campaigns in this region. Several international initiatives, such as the UN Decade of Ocean Science, SAON ROADS, and several large EU projects, aim at improving the coverage, quality, usefulness, and sustainability of Arctic Ocean observations.
This event was dedicated to the presentation of the ongoing consolidation efforts in Arctic observation and discussion about how long-term monitoring and science for understanding basic process can go hand in hand, and how the observing community best can provide data, knowledge, and services for key societal needs.
HIAOOS coordinator, Dr. Hanne Sagen, Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC), introduced the newly launched project entitled, “EU HiAOOS project – High Arctic Ocean Observing System.”
Event Program:
- Introduction: Arild Sundfjord, NPI
- Paul Dodd, NPI: Fram Centre SUDARCO project – Sustainable development of the Arctic Ocean
- Heïdi Sevestre, Arctic PASSION: EU H2020 Arctic PASSION project
- Anna Nikolopoulos, NPI; the Arctic Distributed Biological Observatories
