Workshop on enabling technologies for ocean observing systems in the Arctic
May 7th and 8th 2024 saw an insightful workshop on how to develop and operate sustainable and robust ocean observing systems for the Arctic.
The meeting covered a range of topics including underwater Arctic observing, acoustic communication, data systems, and enabling subsea technologies. Exciting plans were outlined for a proposal for a new centre for innovations in technologies for Arctic Ocean Observing Systems. The initiative will build on collaboration between research and industry to enhance the robustness of ocean observation systems and reduce environmental impact.
The workshop was a special event and part of a series of efforts to bring together researchers and industry actors from the Arctic towards an improved and more integrated observing system. The workshop was supported by the HiAOOS project, and the AOOS project, and hosted by Stinger at their site in Stavanger in Norway.
The workshop was organized with support from two ongoing projects:
“Technologies and collaboration for sustained Arctic Ocean Observing system” – UD-AOOS funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The project aims to prepare for the development, cooperation, implementation, and operation of an international Arctic Ocean Observing System (AOOS).
“High Arctic Ocean Observation System” – HiAOOS funded by the EU HORIZON Europe. The HiAOOS project aims to advance the uptake of new ocean observing capabilities and capacity in the high Arctic to strengthen European and national infrastructures in their effort to support new and ambitions research within climate, environment and geohazards.
