HiAOOS at Arctic Circle 2024

The 2024 Arctic Circle Assembly is fast approaching and some of the HiAOOS team are heading to Reykjavik to be part of the event.

HiAOOS is delighted to be part of a special session, together with our friends from the Polar Connect Consortium: NORDUnet; Sunet, (Swedish University Computer Network), Swedish Research Council; Swedish Polar Research Secretariat; R&D for the next generation of scientific instrumentation, tools and methods (HORIZON-INFRA-2022-TECH-01-01); Technologies and collaborations for sustained Arctic Ocean Observing System (AOOS) funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The session, entitled Digitizing the Arctic – Science and Industry Synergies takes place on Saturday, October 19th from 13H15-14H10.

Installing subsea infrastructu in the Arctic for global connectivity and digiteal transformation of the ocean will drive societal, scientific, and economic development. It will enhance digital autonomy, security, monitoing, resilience, and sustainabile development, as well as contribute to technological advancements. This will require cross-sector collaboration between the industry, the pblic sector, indigenous and local communities and the scientific community.

Bringing together scientists, politicians, decision makers, technology providers, and other stakeholders, we will explore he way forward for robust subsea Arctic observing systems. The discussions will range from technological challenges to opportunities for co-investments between the public and the prorate sector. We hope that the discussions will be a step towards viable business models for an integrated Arctic Ocean Observing System comparable to developments in the satellite field.

Contributing to the session are:

  • Jørgen Qvist, Chief Networking Operating Officer, NORDUnet, Norway.
  • Hanne Sagen, Research Leader & Coordinator of HiAOOS, Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC), Norway.
  • Bjørn Rønning, Director, Norwegian Data Centre Industry.
  • Benoît Pirenne, Chief Innovation and Technology Officer, Ocean Networks Canada.
  • Arne Hestnes, Director Digital Technology, Kongsberg Discovery, Norway.
  • Tore Furevik, Managing Director, Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC), Norway.
