HiAOOS Showcases Arctic Observing Innovation at One Ocean Week 2025

HiAOOS proudly joined the global ocean community at One Ocean Week 2025 in Bergen, 5-11 April 2025, contributing to a week of high-profile events dedicated to ocean science, innovation, and sustainability. The gathering brought together researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, and the public to highlight cutting-edge solutions for understanding and protecting the ocean.

A key highlight of HiAOOS’ participation was the strong collaboration with Kongsberg Discovery, whose presence at the event underscored the essential role of industry partners in advancing next-generation ocean observing systems.

Kongsberg Discovery Highlights Role in Arctic and Global Ocean Observing

At One Ocean Week, Kongsberg Discovery presented their expanding portfolio of ocean technology and their strategic contributions to HiAOOS. As a major technology provider in the project, Kongsberg is working closely with HiAOOS partners to enhance data acquisition, and support the development of an Arctic Digital Twin of the Ocean through their Blue Insight platform.

Their participation included demonstrations of innovative sensors, observing platforms, and real-time data tools designed to operate in challenging polar conditions—critical capabilities for HiAOOS’ aim of building a robust and integrated pan-Arctic observing framework.

Sensors Aboard the One Ocean Expedition to Deliver Data for HiAOOS

A major moment during the week was the launch of the new leg of the One Ocean Expedition, a global circumnavigation effort onboard the Statsraad Lehmkuhl. As part of this mission, Kongsberg Discovery has equipped the vessel with advanced ocean sensors that will directly collect data for HiAOOS.

These onboard systems will provide valuable measurements from across global ocean basins, complementing Arctic data collection and helping HiAOOS improve understanding of ocean circulation, environmental variability, and ecosystem change. The partnership demonstrates how industry and research communities can work together to create long-term, cross-regional datasets in support of science and policy.

HiAOOS Engages Public and Partners at One Ocean Week

Throughout the week, HiAOOS participated in discussions, public outreach activities, and partner meetings, presenting the project’s mission to:

  • strengthen Arctic observing capacity,
  • enhance data quality and interoperability,
  • develop new technologies and methods for harsh environments, and
  • support open and accessible ocean knowledge.

With large crowds visiting the exhibitions and events across Bergen, One Ocean Week offered a strong platform for HiAOOS to raise awareness about the importance of the Arctic in the global climate and ocean system.

Strengthening Collaboration for a Sustainable Ocean

The combined presence of HiAOOS and Kongsberg Discovery at One Ocean Week demonstrated the power of collaboration between research organisations and industry innovators. By integrating cutting-edge technology into research programmes—and by deploying sensors aboard the globe-spanning One Ocean Expedition—HiAOOS is strengthening Europe’s capacity to monitor, understand, and protect the Arctic Ocean.

As momentum continues to build through 2025, this partnership will play a crucial role in delivering the data and insights needed for sustainable ocean management and for advancing the goals of the UN Ocean Decade and European ocean and climate strategies.
