Central Arctic Ocean research infrastructures workshop

In this open workshop we invite research infrastructures (RIs) and research and innovation projects working with ocean observing systems, ocean observing technologies, methods, and tools. During the workshop we will inform each other about ongoing in situ observing activities in the central Arctic. Focus will be on new observing capabilities and capacity for the ice-covered Arctic Ocean. You are hereby invited to present your observation systems and contribute to the discussions about how to advance and sustain ocean observing in the ice-covered regions.

In 2024 a network of multipurpose moorings will be deployed in the Nansen and Amundsen Basins for two years operation. Each mooring will be equipped with oceanographic and acoustic instruments. The HiAOOS system will facilitate for ice and ocean observations, passive acoustics, acoustic tomography, and underwater geo-positioning (UW-GPS). The HiAOOS system will be open for actors who want to test the positioning capabilities of autonomous platforms (gliders, ARGO profilers, floats) in ice covered waters and underwater communication.

Throughout the workshop the emphasis will be on how HiAOOS can support new research in climate, environment and geohazards, and discuss how other projects and research infrastructures altogether contribute to the overall observing capacity in the central Arctic. Topics for discussion are possibilities for other projects 1) to include instruments in moorings in the Arctic Ocean, 2) to test their drifting floats and buoys, 3) to collaborate in field operations, 4) to contribute to methods and tools and 5) to operationalize the data delivery chain from different platforms.

The workshop is a contribution to sustain and enhance collaboration and coordination in Arctic Ocean Observing, and in this way support the development of the Arctic GOOS Regional Alliance. The workshop is organized by Arild Sundfjord (Norwegian Polar Institute) and Hanne Sagen (Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center) as part of the EU-funded HiAOOS project (https://hiaoos.eu) and the AOOS project, funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation costs.

Dates: 24-26 January 2024. Registration will close on 18th January, 2024. Admission after this date will be strictly upon agreement with the organisers.
Location: Fram Centre, Tromsø, Norway
