New Publication: HiAOOS Contributions to Arctic Acoustic Research
Research connected to HiAOOS has been featured in a newly published chapter “Anthropogenic Sounds Compared with AIS Ship Positions Along the Fram Strait (2014–2016),” in “The Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life IV,” an international reference work examining underwater sound and its impacts on marine environments. The publication was co-authored by several researchers involved in HiAOOS and presents approaches that will be applied to future HiAOOS data analysis.

The work focuses on methods for analysing underwater acoustic data collected in ice-covered environments, contributing to growing international efforts to better understand Arctic marine soundscapes and environmental change. Importantly, the study used under-ice datasets that were made accessible through HiAOOS activities and collaborations, demonstrating how the project is helping enable new scientific research in remote polar regions.
By developing analytical approaches for challenging Arctic observing conditions, the publication supports HiAOOS objectives to improve ocean observation capacity in the high Arctic and strengthen understanding of rapidly changing marine environments. The methods described in the chapter are expected to contribute directly to future processing and interpretation of HiAOOS acoustic data.
The Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life IV brings together leading international experts working on underwater acoustics, marine ecosystems and environmental monitoring, covering topics ranging from sound propagation and marine soundscapes to the effects of anthropogenic noise on aquatic species.
