Call for Papers: New “Polar Acoustics” Special Issue Opens in npj Acoustics

The HiAOOS consortium is encouraging researchers working on Arctic and Antarctic soundscapes, underwater noise and environmental acoustics to contribute to a newly launched Special Issue on “Polar Acoustics” in the Nature Portfolio journal npj Acoustics. The Collection is now open for submissions until 22 February 2027.

The Special Issue is being led by an international team of guest editors including HiAOOS partners Dr Philippe Blondel of the University of Bath and Dr Hanne Sagen of NERSC, who also coordinates the HiAOOS project. The Collection aims to advance understanding of how rapidly changing polar environments are reshaping acoustic conditions in the Arctic and Antarctic, with implications for biodiversity, climate research, shipping, resource activities and environmental management.

Climate change is transforming polar regions at an unprecedented pace. Warming temperatures, retreating ice and increased human activity are introducing new acoustic pressures into fragile ecosystems. The issue seeks research on underwater and atmospheric soundscapes, monitoring technologies, ecological impacts, acoustic modelling and the role of sound in understanding environmental change.

The Collection also reflects growing international attention on polar acoustics as a critical research field. Published by the Nature Portfolio, npj Acoustics is a fully open-access journal dedicated to innovative research across the acoustics field, from underwater sound propagation and environmental acoustics to sensing technologies and soundscape analysis.
